PHOTOSPHERE Studios

Often times, children are so amazed with the world around them that they have trouble sitting still. They want to move around, wander off, and explore…constantly.

The tips below will help you prepare you and your child for their photoshoot. In a nutshell, we want our children to be happy before, during, and after the process. Whatever we can do to ensure that they are happy will help the process move more smoothly.

  1. Speak to your children beforehand. Explain to them that you intend to do a photoshoot with them, the type of photoshoot it is, that the shoot will not be long, and that they can go do something fun afterwards. Practicing while you are out and about is a good way to loosen them up. If they are very young, you can play “the photographer and the model” game to get them used to the idea of posing in front of the camera.
  2. Plan the day, time, and location strategically. Pick a day where you have extra time and you can be relaxed. If your child has a nap time, plan way before or after the nap.
  3. Make sure they are comfortable in what they are wearing. If the child is unhappy in what they are wearing, it will surely show up on their face. Picking outfits with your children before the shoot is a good way to make sure that all of you are happy with what they will be wearing.
  4. Bring lots of water and snacks. Make sure they eat before the shoot, AND bring more snacks and water to the shoot. This is very important!
  5. Relax and stay positive. Sometimes as parents, we have too many expectations and can add too much stress to our children during a photoshoot. Stress throws them out of their “happy place” and makes the photoshoot a very difficult process for everyone. The best photos always come from a child who has a positive and supportive parent. If the shoot is at a playground and the child wants to run around a little, that is fine. The photographer should be equipped and ready to snap those playful moments in a split second. As the parent, be readily available to comfort your child and don’t be afraid to get in the shots too.
